SAR-I-PUL, Afghanistan -- Afghan Taliban are endangering Sar-i-Pul city, the capital of Sar-i-Pul Province, Salahetdin Chirikzada, a member of the provincial legislature, told Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL)'s Turkmen service recently.

The Taliban operate a combat training base in Shiremha village, Chirikzada said, adding that the graduates of that training fan out over the whole province.

Government forces have the situation in Sar-i-Pul Province under control, the provincial police chief, Gen. Abdulkayum Bakizai, told RFE/RL. He cited the presence of normally functioning bazaars, stores and government agencies in the province.
