BISHKEK -- The Kyrgyz Defence Council July 4 approved measures to reform the country's police, President Almazbek Atambayev's press office said in a July 5 statement. The reforms are meant to strengthen the rule of law and to accelerate economic development, Atambayev, who chaired the Defence Council meeting, said. The present-day system of law enforcement does not meet the demands of national security, the Defence Council said. It did not give a time frame for implementing the new policies.
The reforms include analysing intelligence pertinent to public safety on the basis of co-operation with the public, using public oversight to assess the work of police agencies, and requiring police officers to pass exams at every step of career advancement.
