Kyrgyz imams raise qualifications

By Asker Sultanov

BISHKEK -- A seminar for Osh Province imams began in Osh city July 11, the Bishkek-based religious NGO Iyman Foundation said in a July 12 statement. The two-week-long seminar for imams from various districts of Osh Province will teach them a deeper knowledge of Islam as well as some secular skills like time management, oratory and IT use.

"It is very pleasing to us that the national government supports imams and shows interest in raising their educational level," a Nookat District imam, Elchi Turganbayev, said, according to Iyman.

The government and Iyman have periodically conducted such workshops so that clergy can more effectively debunk extremist rhetoric.
