AKTOBE, Kazakhstan -- A court in Aktobe recently sentenced 12 defendants to various prison terms for trying to join the "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL) in Syria, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) reported July 14, quoting a judge in the city.
The main figure among the defendants received an eight-year sentence. Most of the others received six-year sentences.
The defendants, all men, reached out to ISIL via the internet.
