Uzbekistan retains beefed-up security on Kazakh border

Staff Report

TASHKENT -- Uzbekistan is retaining strict security on its shared border with Kazakhstan after the July 18 terrorist massacre in Almaty, Kazakhstan's financial hub, RIA Novosti reported July 18, quoting a spokesperson for the Uzbekistani Committee for State Border Protection.

Police July 18 made two arrests after gunmen killed five people in Almaty that day.

Uzbekistan originally strengthened security on the frontier in connection with a June 23-24 multi-national summit in Tashkent. That security was supposed to diminish at some point, but Uzbekistan retained it after learning of the terrorist acts in Almaty.

Security measures along the border in times of heightened alert include greater use of technological surveillance and more intelligence gathering, the Uzbekistani border service spokesperson said.
