Staff Report

NAMANGAN, Uzbekistan -- The Namangan Provincial Court sentenced seven local residents to various prison terms for trying to join the "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL), Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty reported July 23, quoting a source in Namangan Province law enforcement.

Authorities determined that the defendants all became radicalised through the Odnoklassniki social network while doing migrant work abroad. Their sentences ranged from five to nine years.

Uzbekistani authorities arrested all seven after they returned from working abroad and before they could accomplish their planned trips to Syria.
