Afghan Taliban make advances near Tajik border

Staff Report

KABUL -- The Afghan Taliban have moved into Khwaja Ghar District, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) reported July 31, quoting Afghan authorities.

The news is of concern to Dushanbe because Khwaja Ghar borders Panj District, Khatlon Province, Tajikistan. The Taliban fighting in Afghan border districts include many Tajiks who want to carry their "jihad" across the Amu Darya River into Tajikistan, RFE/RL reported, citing Tajik observers.

Kunduz Province, another Afghan province bordering Tajikistan, is under Taliban threat too, said Ajmal Oriyon, a reporter for Radio Free Afghanistan.

Afghan troops fighting the Taliban in Khwaja Ghar are calling for reinforcements and coalition air support.
