Turkmenistan closes check-points on Kazakh border

By Dzhumaguly Annayev

TURKMENBASHI, Turkmenistan -- Turkmen authorities August 4-8 barred foreign citizens from entering Turkmenistan at check-points along its border with Kazakhstan, a State Border Service (GPS) officer stationed at the Temir-baba check-point told Caravanserai.

The temporary prohibition applied to residents of Mangystau Province, Kazakhstan, who have been able for several years to enter neighbouring Balkan Province, Turkmenistan, with relatively few restrictions.

The ban stems from a working trip that President Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov took to the Caspian seashore, the officer said.

However, other Caravanserai sources cite the deadly June 5 Aktobe and July 18 Almaty terrorist attacks as the reason for Turkmen caution toward Kazakhstan.
