Tajiks discuss youth radicalisation

Staff Report

DUSHANBE -- Scholars, diplomats and law enforcement officials from Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan are discussing youth radicalisation at a forum in Dushanbe, AsiaPlus.tj reported August 8. It did not give the dates of the "Youth radicalisation as a threat to Central Asian security" conference.

The main purpose of the conference is "to discuss methods of ... minimising the threat of radicalism among the rising generation", Nuriddin Kashirbayev, chairman of the National Association of Independent Mass-Media in Tajikistan, said in his speech. "The recent events in Kazakhstan [deadly terrorist attacks in Aktobe June 5 and in Almaty July 18] demonstrate that the prevention of radicalism among youth has some shortcomings."

However, overly coercive methods are likelier to make enemies than to defeat terrorism, Abdulmalik Kadyrov, chief of the Internews office in Tajikistan, said in his speech.
