KHUJAND, Tajikistan -- Authorities in Khujand, Sughd Province, have detained 30 local residents since the start of 2016 on suspicion of being extremists, CA-News.org reported August 19.
The suspects are accused of belonging to various groups that seek to lure Tajiks to go fight in Syria and Iraq and to commit subversive activity within Tajikistan.
Defendants convicted of participating in an extremist group face up to five years' imprisonment, while those who recruit others could be jailed for up to 12 years.
