Uzbekistan closes border with Kyrgyzstan temporarily

Staff Report

TASHKENT -- Uzbekistan has temporarily shut down its shared border with Kyrgyzstan ahead of Uzbekistan's Independence Day (September 1), Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty reported August 22, quoting the Kyrgyz State Border Service (GPS).

The border was closed as of August 22, the Kyrgyz GPS said.

Uzbekistan did not disclose when it would re-open the frontier.

The border closure does not apply to employees of diplomatic missions and international NGOs, or to Kyrgyz nationals who entered Uzbekistan before it shut down the border, the Kyrgyz GPS added.
