Tajik sentenced to 5 years for trying to join ISIL

Staff Report

DUSHANBE -- A court in Bokhtar, Khatlon Province, recently sentenced a local man, Khusein Rakhmonov, to five years in prison for trying to join the "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL) in Syria, AsiaPlus.tj reported August 23, quoting the court.

Rakhmonov used his cell phone to establish contact with ISIL and asked for ways to go to Syria, the court found. In January, he did reach Afghanistan, where he received military and religious training. When he returned that same month to Tajikistan, his ISIL contacts told him they lacked the money to send him to Syria. They asked him instead to attend local mosques to see what kind of video surveillance the mosques had and what opinions of ISIL the imams expressed.

The circumstances of his arrest were not reported.
