Uzbek senate approves police reform bill

Staff Report

TASHKENT -- Uzbekistan's senate August 24 approved a bill on police reform, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) reported August 26. The bill awaits a final decision by President Islam Karimov.

Details of the bill were not available for public discussion. Police in Uzbekistan have worked under the same law since 1991. They are hoping for the government to address matters like the need for overtime pay and their desire to come off a constant state of high alert, a police officer who requested anonymity told RFE/RL.
