Kazakh, who nabbed suspected terrorist, receives medal

Staff Report

AKTOBE, Kazakhstan -- Authorities in Aktobe recently gave a medal to a civilian who disarmed a suspected terrorist during the deadly terror attacks in that city June 5.

Kuanish Karasartov was driving past the scene of a shoot-out when he saw a police car with three dead men, probably police officers, in the back seat. An armed man suddenly appeared "out of nowhere", he said, adding that he grabbed the man's gun, knocked him down and turned him over to arriving police.

A second criminal opened fire at him but missed and ran, Karasartov said.

On August 29, at an Aktobe police station, Karasartov received a medal for his role in helping ensure law and order.

Terrorists killed seven Kazakhstanis in Aktobe June 5. Authorities in the next few days killed 18 extremists and made 9 arrests.
