Staff Report

BISHKEK -- The Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) helped the Kyrgyz Economy Ministry conduct a September 15-16 Kyrgyz roundtable on helping Kyrgyzstan implement UN Security Council Resolution 1540 against the proliferation of WMDs, the OSCE said in a September 16 statement. The roundtable took place in Bulan Sogottu, Issyk-Kul Province.

Various Kyrgyz government agencies sent representatives, including the Interior Ministry (MVD), State Border Service (GPS) and State Customs Service. Civil society also was represented.

Priorities included increasing government officials and civil society activists' knowledge of Resolution 1540 and seeking recommendations on "export-import control, biosecurity, legal basis for non-proliferation and possible ways of updating the NAP [National Action Plan for implementing Resolution 1540] to address the issue of proliferation of weapons of mass destruction", the OSCE said.
