Kyrgyz discuss police reform

By Asker Sultanov

BISHKEK -- Kyrgyz and foreign specialists gathered in Bishkek for a September 22-23 conference on international police reform, the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) said in a September 22 statement.

The OSCE and several Kyrgyz government agencies co-organised the event. About 100 delegates from Kyrgyzstan, Estonia, Georgia, Hungary, Lithuania, Tajikistan and elsewhere gathered to "focus on police reform in the context of the wider security sector reform recently launched by the political leadership of Kyrgyzstan", the OSCE said.

"This is a unique opportunity for stakeholders to choose the most appropriate model for Kyrgyzstan to reform its law enforcement system," Anna Nersesyants, acting head of the OSCE Centre in Bishkek, said, according to the statement.
