Some Turkmens might have joined ISIL in 2013

ASHGABAT -- An unspecified number of Turkmens fleeing arrest might have joined the "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL), Alternative News of Turkmenistan (ANT) reported October 3, The Turkmens, who were fleeing a crackdown in Turkmenabad in 2013, went to Turkey, where an unspecified number joined ISIL, ANT reported, without giving its source.

"Several [of the suspects] succeeded in escaping responsibility," a National Security Ministry (MNB) employee who identified himself only as Shatlyk told Caravanserai.

In 2015, Turkish authorities arrested 63 Turkmen nationals who were trying to cross into Syria, the Turkish newspaper Radikal reported last December.
