AKTOBE PROVINCE, Kazakhstan -- A court in Aktobe October 25 sentenced a Kazakhstani man to 12 years in prison on terrorism charges, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) reported that day.

The court convicted Nurlan Omirbekov of "fomenting terrorism and religious extremism, kidnapping, robbery, extortion, and inciting hatred", RFE/RL reported.

Two other defendants received eight-year prison sentences for helping Omirbekov in kidnapping.

Omirbekov was planning to join the "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL) in Syria, police said.
