Tajik border officer killed by Afghan smugglers

DUSHANBE -- A Tajik Border Forces officer was killed the night of October 19-20 in a shoot-out with drug traffickers from Afghanistan, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty's Tajik service reported November 1, quoting the Border Forces press office.

Umeljon Khasanov, 27, was killed in Khamadoni District, which borders Takhar Province, Afghanistan. Tajik forces are trying to identify the drug smugglers who fatally shot him. He is the first Tajik border guard to be killed by smugglers this year.
