Kazakhstan learns to manage small arms, light weapons

Staff Report

ASTANA -- Kazakhstani law enforcement personnel November 9-10 attended an Astana workshop on safe management of small arms and light weapons (SALW), the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) said in a statement.

The number of Kazakhstanis attending the workshop was not given. Experts from Spain, the UN, EU, EUROPOL and other countries and bodies discussed ways to prevent "the diversion of SALW into the hands of organised criminal and terrorist groups through the use of effective transfer controls as well as safe and secure storage of such weapons", the OSCE said.

Managing SALW is a key way to combat "armed violence, terrorism and transnational organised crime", the OSCE said.
