Kazakhstan convicted 70 terrorists in 2016

Staff Report

ASTANA -- Kazakhstani courts in 2016 convicted about 70 defendants on terrorism charges, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty's Kazakh service reported Friday (December 23).

The bulk of the defendants were convicted of intending to join the insurgency in Syria or of belonging to the banned organisation Tablighi Jamaat.

In the most recent terrorism trial culminating in convictions, which took place in December, a court in Karaganda Province sentenced eight defendants to prison for plotting a terrorist attack in Balkhash last summer.
