Kazakh police launch operation ahead of Universiade

ALMATY -- Police are planning to conduct a preemptive operation in Almaty and its suburbs from January 6 to the 25, Tengrinews.kz reported, quoting a Thursday (January 6) statement by Almaty Anti-Terrorism Operational Headquarters.

The measure comes as Almaty plans to host a January 29-February 8 international sports tournament, the Winter Universiade 2017.

The Universiade takes place every two years.

Police will check up on "individuals registered on their watchlists", the statement said. "Owners of firearms ... will be subject to a routine inspection."
