New video of Central Asian terrorists appears online

By Alexander Bogatik

ASTANA -- The Islamic Jihad Union (IJU) has posted a new video clip, Erlan Karin, director of the government-run Kazakhstan Institute for Strategic Studies, noted on his Facebook page, according to a Wednesday (January 11) report by 365kz.info. The IJU is a splinter group of the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan (IMU).

"The video is essentially a message from [militants in] Afghanistan to their 'colleagues' in Aleppo," Karin wrote on Facebook. "They address their viewers in several languages -- Uzbek, Tajik and Kyrgyz."

One militant in the video speaks Kazakh, he added.

"Several of these Central Asian militant groups ... have announced they will form units in Afghanistan," Karin said Monday (January 9) in Astana. "During the past several months, they've started publishing videos and messages from within Afghanistan."

"Afghanistan once again will probably become the centre of attraction for radical groups -- the Afghan-Pakistani border, to be more precise," he said.
