Kyrgyz border troops learn about extremist threat

By Asker Sultanov

BISHKEK -- The Bishkek-based Iyman Foundation for the Development of Spiritual Culture Thursday (January 19) organised an anti-extremism seminar for Kyrgyz border troops, the Iyman press office said in a statement.

The Bishkek event was meant for troops stationed at the central administration of the State Border Service. Officials from Iyman, the State National Security Committee, the Spiritual Administration for Muslims of Kyrgyzstan (DUMK) and CIS Anti-Terrorism Centre described ways to fight extremism and terrorism.

"For extremists, professional troops present special interest [as recruiting targets] because they have physical and military training," DUMK official Bilal Saipiyev said at the event. "They will do everything possible to recruit them."

Giving troops at least a minimal knowledge of Islam is essential to help them avoid extremist recruitment, according to Iyman.
