KHUJAND, Tajikistan -- The Sughd Province Court in 2016 examined 18 criminal cases related to Article 401 of the Tajik criminal code, Avesta.tj reported Thursday (February 2). Article 401 punishes Tajik citizens' participation in foreign wars, such as the one in Syria.
The majority of the defendants were accused of fighting in Syria, the court told reporters. The number of defendants in the 18 cases was not disclosed, but in 2016, 30 residents of Sughd Province were convicted of terrorism and extremism.
