Uzbek president calls for stronger partnership with UN

Staff Report

TASHKENT -- Uzbekistani President Shavkat Mirziyoyev Thursday (March 2) called for the UN "to participate more actively in the processes occurring in Uzbekistan and in all Central Asia", Mirziyoyev's press office said in a statement.

Mirziyoyev made the appeal to Miroslav Jenča, the UN assistant secretary-general for political affairs. The president emphasised the UN's role in "supporting global security and stability ... and in the fight against terrorism, extremism and drug trafficking".

Jenča arrived in Tashkent to mark the 25th anniversary of Uzbekistan's entry into the UN. He and Mirziyoyev exchanged opinions on aspects of Uzbekistani-UN co-operation and ways to broaden that relationship.
