Uzbekistan, Tajikistan consider ending visa requirements

Staff Report

DUSHANBE -- Residents of the border zones in Tajikistan and Uzbekistan soon might be able to visit the other country's border zone without needing a visa, Uzbekistani Ambassador to Tajikistan Shokasym Shoislamov told Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL)'s Tajik service Tuesday (March 7).

The move, which would facilitate business development and family reunions, is under consideration by specialists, Shoislamov said in an RFE/RL interview.

Other Tajik citizens without criminal records or other legal problems will be able to obtain an Uzbekistani visa within a week of applying, he said.

Shoislamov urged listeners "not to believe rumours" that an Uzbekistani visa is difficult or impossible to obtain.

Uzbekistani President Shavkat Mirziyoyev has made improved relations with his country's neighbours a top priority since taking office last year.
