Staff Report

TASHKENT -- Authorities in Tashkent since the beginning of 2017 have found about 1,400 neglected children performing menial labour in the city's markets, Central Asian News Service reported Wednesday (March 15), quoting local police.

The youths, who live on their own, busy themselves with jobs like unloading carts and washing cars. During an 18-day operation called Sweep-Anti-Terror (Tozalash-Antiterror), authorities concerned about such youths' potential for radicalisation found 398 child labourers in local markets, said Tashkent police Col. Rashid Umirov, according to local media.

Police sent the youths to the Tashkent-based Centre for Social and Legal Aid to Juveniles.

The majority of child labourers come from the provinces in search of work, said police.
