7 Uzbekistani extremists imprisoned

Staff Report

SAMARKAND -- Seven Samarkand Province residents received seven-year prison terms for trying to join the "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL) in Syria, CA-News.org reported Thursday (April 5), quoting the provincial court.

All seven confessed their guilt, said the court.

The defendants regularly viewed videos prepared by Imam Bukhari Jamaat, a militant group in Syria predominantly comprised of ethnic Uzbeks from various countries, according to the court.

Besides urging viewers to go fight in Syria and Iraq, the propaganda called for the overthrow of the Uzbekistani government.
