Astana to host regional counter-terrorism hub

Staff Report

ASTANA -- Kazakhstani Prosecutor General Zhakip Asanov Monday (April 10) in Vienna signed a document authorising the creation of a regional counter-terrorism hub in Astana, Kazinform reported Monday, quoting Murat Zhumanbai, spokesman for the Kazakhstani Central Communications Service.

The other signatory to the pact was UN Office on Drugs and Crime Executive Director Yury Fedotov.

The hub, based at the Academy of Law Enforcement Agencies under the Prosecutor General's Office, will be "the only place in Central Asia where law enforcement and security personnel will study the best international practices .... in fighting terrorism and drug trafficking", said Zhumanbai.

No date for the facility's opening was reported.
