Kyrgyz shut down 4 seminaries for illegal activities

Staff Report

BISHKEK -- Kyrgyz authorities shut down four seminaries for illegal activities, Kushtarbek Mamatov told Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty's Kyrgyz service Tuesday (April 11).

The seminaries in question operated without any of the proper documents and had no legal basis to educate children, he said.

"Earlier, we checked them and warned them," said Mamatov. "The seminaries had no buildings at all of their own. They conducted their education inside mosques."

A Bishkek commission of religious and civil officials recently inspected a number of religious schools in the capital and found various safety and hygienic violations.

Kyrgyzstan has 102 seminaries, more than half of which have undergone registration and comply with the law, according to the government.
