Kazakhstani president, clergy discuss religious situation

Staff Report

ASTANA -- President Nursultan Nazarbayev discussed ways of opposing destructive religious movements in the country with the members of the Spiritual Administration for the Muslims of Kazakhstan (DUMK) Wednesday (April 19), the president's press service reported that day.

"Today, our citizens are consuming all sorts of information online. And it's also through the internet that they gain access to teachings of non-traditional movements. They use all sorts of techniques and methods to reach people. We too must take to using information technologies to fight them. If necessary, the state is prepared to support DUMK," the president said.

The president also underlined the importance of religious education, especially for imams.

"Today, 3,800 imams work with DUMK. Half of them have undergone courses to further their religious education. But this is not enough. We need to understand how we will further educate imams and experts who work in this field," Nazarbayev said.

The president also shared his concerns over the issue of religious ignorance and religious clothes among youth.
