ASTANA -- UN agencies are using the June 10-September 10 world's fair EXPO-2017 in Astana to urge "new momentum to ongoing efforts towards transition to clean energy", said the UN News Centre in a Tuesday (June 13) statement.

The UN is hoping to showcase "the centrality of the energy sector to address global sustainable development challenges", it added.

"I hope EXPO-2017 will advance dialogues between governments, climate scientists and engineers to find practical solutions for reducing greenhouse gas emissions while generating energy," said Cihan Sultanoðlu, the UN commissioner-general for UN participation at EXPO-2017.

UN agencies at the fair "have been highlighting the importance of ensuring universal access to energy, global best practices in reduction of carbon emissions, greening the economy, and adaptation of innovative technologies", said the UN News Centre.
