Uzbekistan foreign minister: terrorism is a crime against humanity

Staff Report

ASHGABAT -- Uzbekistan's laws and constitution regard religious extremism and terrorism as crimes against peace, humanity and public safety, Foreign Minister Abdulaziz Kamilov said in his Tuesday (June 13) speech at a high-level forum in Ashgabat on regional security, according to the Uzbekistani Foreign Ministry.

Uzbekistan is devoting great attention to wide-scale, targeted educational work meant to create an atmosphere of rejection of all forms of extremism, he said, adding that the only way "to eradicate extremism is by arming ourselves with an ... ideology based on a true interpretation of holy Islamic writings".

Key factors in preventing radicalisation include fostering inter-ethnic tolerance, elevating the population's prosperity and conducting a systematic dialogue with the public, he said.
