URALSK, Kazakhstan -- A West Kazakhstan Province court convicted eight residents of Jangala village for sympathising with the "Islamic State" (IS) and for planning a terrorist act, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty's Kazakh service reported Thursday (June 22), quoting the provincial inter-district specialised criminal court.
Evidence against the eight included their own photographs with an IS flag.
"The convicted men were sentenced to terms ranging from 5 to 15 years," said the court in a statement.
The defendants became radicalised by the June 2016 terrorist attack in Aktobe, according to the court.
