ALMATY -- Security personnel at Almaty International Airport Tuesday (August 22) detained eight Syrian men accused of using altered Bulgarian passports to enter and leave Kazakhstan, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) reported Tuesday, quoting Kazakhstan's Border Control Service.

Border guards arrested the eight after they arrived, said authorities.

The Syrians had replaced identification pages in the Bulgarian passports and placed forged border control stamps on some pages, according to the Border Control Service.

The men allegedly said they were trying to reach a European Union country.

The arrests come one day after authorities in Astana detained two Syrians accused of using Bulgarian passports in an attempt to fly to the United Kingdom.
