DUSHANBE -- Tajik authorities are negotiating with Afghan counterparts to obtain the release of an abducted Tajik fishery guard, a source at the Tajik Interior Ministry (MVD) told Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL)'s Tajik service Tuesday (September 19).

Afghan smugglers Saturday (September 16) kidnapped Khabib Karakhonov, 55, a resident of Sairob village, Khatlon Province, at the fishery he was guarding, the source said.

Karakhonov reportedly is being held in Takhar Province, Afghanistan, but his kidnappers have made no demands. A commission of Tajik border guards is negotiating with their Afghan counterparts to obtain his release. The Tajik Border Troops had no comment on the situation.
