JALAL-ABAD PROVINCE, Kyrgyzstan -- The Baimak highway border crossing between Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan fully re-opened Tuesday (September 19), Jalal-Abad Deputy Governor Mamasaly Akmatov told Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty's Kyrgyz service.

The Kyrgyz side of the crossing is situated in Ala-Buka District, Jalal-Abad Province.

Another Uzbekistani-Kyrgyz border crossing, Dostuk/Dustlik, re-opened September 6.

In 2010, in reaction to unrest in Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan imposed restrictions on or shut down altogether its border crossings on the Kyrgyz frontier. At the handful of functioning border crossings, only citizens of border provinces with formal invitations were allowed to cross.

The re-openings come after Uzbekistani President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, who took office last year, visited Kyrgyzstan September 5-6 -- the first trip to Kyrgyzstan by an Uzbekistani president in 17 years.
