Kazakhstani anti-extremism charity convenes in Astana

By Ksenia Bondal

ASTANA -- The oversight council of the Astana-based anti-extremism charity Uakyp Foundation Wednesday (October 4) convened at an Astana hotel to discuss Uakyp's work. It was the second session for the relatively new charity's council.

Religious Affairs and Civil Society Minister Nurlan Yermekbayev chaired the meeting. The oversight council includes members of the Kazakhstani senate, the supreme mufti of Kazakhstan and other civic and religious figures.

Uakyp is seeking to help pay clerics' salaries and to finance construction of religious buildings in Kazakhstan's provinces, said Yermekbayev, adding that donors to Uakyp include the Foundation of the First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan (the charity's very first benefactor), as well as some businesses and wealthy individuals.
