KARAGANDA, Kazakhstan -- Kazakhstan is scheduled to hold counter-terrorism exercises in Karaganda Province Wednesday (November 22), Zakon.kz reported Tuesday (November 21), citing the press service of the provincial operational headquarters for combating terrorism.
The exercises will take place in the cities of Temirtau and Karaganda.
Participating troops will perform simulated combat conditions. The exercise is meant to teach them skills for addressing terrorist threats in public spaces.
With the 'Islamic State' on the verge of defeat, Kazakhstanis who joined the group are likely to begin returning home, where they will face anti-terrorism measures.
Popular support in Central Asia for Islamist insurgencies in the Middle East and beyond is waning.
