NEW YORK/ASTANA -- Kazakhstan is supporting peace in Afghanistan through transportation infrastructure investment and humanitarian assistance, Kazakhstan's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Kairat Umarov said Thursday (December 21).

Umarov made his remarks in New York during the United Nations Security Council open debate on the situation in Afghanistan, Kazinform reported December 22.

The UN Security Council members and other participants discussed challenges facing Afghanistan, highlighting issues such as the increased number of terrorist acts, drug production and trafficking, and the presence of the "Islamic State" (IS) militants in the country.

International and domestic efforts toward stability, national reconciliation, economic development and protecting women's rights were also covered.

It is very important to ensure close economic co-operation in the region in order to reduce the number of Afghans taking part in armed groups or drug trafficking, the Kazakh delegation said.

This will help improve security both in Afghanistan and throughout the region, the delegation said.
