DUSHANBE -- A Tajik student studying in Moscow has been arrested for allegedly trying to join the "Islamic State" (IS) in Syria, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL)'s Tajik service reported Tuesday (January 23).

Navruz Sangov, a 23-year-old, was arrested last November at the airport in Baku, Azerbaijan. He allegedly was trying to fly to Istanbul before traveling overland to Syria, said a source in Tajik law enforcement Monday (January 22).

He was extradited to Tajikistan, the source added.

Sangov has denied the charges, saying he wanted to obtain medical care in Turkey.

Sangov was а straight-A student and planned to work for a Tajik security agency after graduation, according to family members and friends.
