TASHKENT -- Restoration work has begun on a railway between Uzbekistan and Tajikistan, AKIpress reported Monday (February 12), citing local media.
Uzbekistan has begun work on the railway, which leads to Khatlon Province, Tajikistan, which had been closed for years because of poor relations between the neighbours.
Work is expected to be complete by March 10, ahead of a state visit by Uzbekistani President Shavkat Mirziyoyev to Tajikistan.
Uzbekistan and Tajikistan have plans for rail passenger service between their countries.
The project's goal is to provide surplus hydro-electric power from Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan to Afghanistan and Pakistan during the summer months.
