ASTANA -- Recent polling shows that 90% of Kazakhstanis oppose intolerance, fundamentalism and fanaticism, Kazinform reported Wednesday (February 21).

Minister of Religious and Civil Society Affairs Nurlan Yermekbayev cited the findings during an enlarged meeting of his ministry's leadership.

"Today, the majority have learnt to discern moderate, normal religiosity from radical ideology," Yermekbayev said. "As polls show, 90% of Kazakhstanis support state policy and steadfast rejection of destructive religious movements."

Kazakhstani citizens' attitudes toward extremism have changed during the past year and a half, he said.

Yermekbayev described his ministry's work during the past year on social media. In 2017, it created communities on social networks, he said, adding that those groups now have more than 250,000 regular participants.

The ministry's goal this year is to raise those communities' work to a new level, he said.
