BISHKEK -- The Kyrgyz Association of Women in the Security Sector, with support from the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), held a regional conference in Bishkek March 30 on expanding women's role in development and security, according to an OSCE statement on Friday (April 6).

The conference, titled "The Role of Women from the Sectors of Security, Law and Order in the Sustainable Development of Regions", attracted government officials from Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan, as well as civil society activists and journalists.

Participants discussed ways to expand opportunities for women in sustainable development and security in the provinces and best practices in addressing cases of violence against women and children.

"I would like to express my gratitude to all women in the security sector of Kyrgyzstan who risk their lives to ensure public order and the welfare of the country, while at the same time raising children, supporting the family and thus making an invaluable contribution to the country's future," Pierre von Arx, the head of the OSCE Programme Office in Bishkek, told the conference.
