DUSHANBE -- US sanctions and threats of a missile strike in Syria led to a drop in the value of the Russian ruble this week, Asia-Plus reported Thursday (April 12).

The US government announced sanctions Friday (April 6) against Russian oligarchs and government officials in response to Moscow's alleged interference in the 2016 US elections and other Russian aggression.

Meanwhile, the US administration this week threatened missile strikes against Russia-backed Syria for a deadly gas attack over the weekend that killed at least 40 civilians and hospitalised over 500.

The Russian ruble (RUB) has lost 10.5% of its value against the Tajik somoni (TJS) since the beginning of this week and has fallen to its lowest point since 2016, according to the National Bank of Tajikistan.
