BISHKEK -- A pair of Kyrgyz NGOs are organising a nationwide campaign to raise funds to provide chemotherapy to women with cancer, 24.kg reported Tuesday (May 8).

The Together Against Cancer Foundation and the Kurdashym School of Patients are conducting the "Save the Mother's Life" charitable event on Mother's Day, which is celebrated May 20 in Kyrgyzstan.

Every year, more than 1,000 Kyrgyz female cancer patients cannot afford chemotherapy, according to the project organisers.

"The foundation receives requests from women to help with the purchase of medicine for chemotherapy. There is no state support, and patients are forced to fully pay for chemotherapy," said the orgainsers.

"Therefore, a woman who has cancer often sacrifices her life so her children are not left without housing or food," they said.
