ASTANA -- A delegation from the European Parliament (EP) met with Kazakh lawmakers Thursday (May 10) in Astana, according to a statement from the press office of the lower house (Mazhilis) of Kazakhstan's parliament.

The 15th EU-Kazakhstan Parliamentary Co-operation Committee is set to meet Thursday and Friday (May 10-11), noted a statement from the EP.

Topics to be discussed include Kazakhstan's activities as a member of the UN Security Council since last year, as well as efforts toward peace in Afghanistan and Kazakhstan's efforts to mediate in Syria, said the Mazhilis statement.

Also on the agenda are Kazakhstan's economic and social reforms, improvement in investment attractiveness, energy security and regional co-operation.

Expanding co-operation with the European Union is one of Kazakhstan's strategic priorities, said Nurlan Nigmatulin, chairman of the Mazhilis, in the statement.

Iveta Grigule, leader of the EP delegation and co-chairperson of the committee, praised Kazakhstan's efforts to resolve the Syrian conflict and to stabilise Afghanistan.

She underlined the country's role in ensuring security not only in Asia but across the globe, according to the statement.
