DUSHANBE -- Dozens of Tajiks Monday (May 21) gathered near the Iranian embassy in Dushanbe to protest Iran's attempts to interfere in Tajikistan's affairs, Asia-Plus reported, citing the Faraj.tj website.

The demonstrations lasted about half an hour.

One of the signs carried by the protesters asked "What do you want from the people of Tajikistan?"

Relations have soured in recent years between Tajikistan and Iran. Tehran has been providing financial support for Tajik hydropower infrastructure projects.

Since 2015, other areas of contention have included import restrictions on food from Iran and accusations that Iran backed high-profile killings during Tajikistan's civil war in the 1990s.
