Kyrgyz immunology centre warns of rise in vaccine refusals

BISHKEK -- The number of Kyrgyz refusing vaccinations is growing, 24.kg reported Monday (May 21) citing the Republican Immunoprophylaxis Centre.

Objections include religious grounds, vaccine quality and medical advice from various sources, said the centre, adding that even some doctors have suggested refusing vaccinations.

In 2017, at least 47.3% of refusals came from Bishkek, the capital.

"Refusal of vaccination can lead to outbreaks of diseases," warned the centre.

Vaccines are free in Kyrgyzstan, thanks to a 90-10 split in funding by the vaccination NGO Gavi and the Kyrgyz government.
